Family Keepsakes...
This page is exhibiting some of the family furniture, memorabilia or heirlooms we still have in the family. The first nine photos are from Larry's and include the table that Grandpa made, one of the two lamps we received from Nana's estate (I have both), Grandma Ackerman's glass table top that is like tray, Mom's hurricane lamp and the Ackermans sign. I am working on photos of other keepsakes at various family member's homes.
Background on some of the items in the slideshow below:
Glass topped table (slide 7) Grandma Ackerman bought at the antique store on Red Arrow Highway outside Stevensville. Grandpa Ackerman built the spindle leg table (slides 6 & 7). Grandma Ackerman called Nana's sewing kit a "conversation piece" and used to place it at the foot of her swivel chair and put her feet on it (slides 23 & 24). The "Liquor Cabinet" was Nana's and had a lock on it (slide 25 & 26). It gained the nickname the liquor cabinet because Grandpa & Grandma Ackerman lost the key to it and when they finally paid a locksmith to open it there was a bottle of liquor and some old cookies - very old - in it. Jimmy and I were at their house when they opened it- tried the cookies but yuk even for kids! Grandpa glued part of Nana's linoleum kitchen floor to the bottom when they inherited it (slide 26). Anna's tea set was a breakfast tea set with a sugar bowl, very small teapot and creamer she bought in the 1930s (slide 27). Grandma Ackerman's "flapper purse" she bought in the 1920's (slide 28). Dayle has replaced the bag part but the snap and ornamentation at the top are original. The "Sled Table" was Nana's and mom inherited it in 1963 when Nana passed (slide 29). We used to turn it upside down and use it as a sled, which mom hated, and that is why I call it the sled table. Dayle has refinished it and uses it to keep some of her many tea sets. The procelain set of a woman and dog was bought by Grandpa Ackerman (slide 30), I think, to represent Grandma Ackerman and Gypsy. The photo of Nana's Dutch painting is the original that Dayle has, and that is also the original frame (with some minor repair on one of the corners). Aunt Patty and I have duplicates I made and mine is in slide 1.
