Lil was born in Harbert, Michigan to Rose Alwilda Larsen and Adonijah Dolph on April 1, 1909. Her parents weren't married at the time, but did marry in 1911 (see DNA/Geneaology Mystery Page for more info). Grandma, her sister Sal and Rose moved around a lot in the Three Oaks area due to the fact Addie wasn't able to keep many jobs. During her childhood, Grandma lived with, or visited, her grandparents (Anna and Sivert) often. She was very close to both of them and really enjoyed being on their farms, whether in Harbert or Decatur.
Grandpa dated Grandma Ackerman for much of 1930, they married on November 22, 1930 in Michigan City, Indiana. Grandma lived with Uncle Norm in the Roseland neighborhood in Chicago at 21 W. 110th Street. This was only a few blocks from the main shopping district in South Chicago where Grandma was looking for work. We still have some of the letters Grandma wrote to "Gib" in 1930 (March 19, October 5, October 9 and November 9). It is interesting that she simply addressed the envelopes "Mr. Gilbert Ackerman, Bridgman, Michigan" and that is all she needed for an address at that time. It cost 2¢ in 1930.
